Mandarin speakers OR mainlanders in Hong Kong

Shuting Deng made this Freedom of Information request to Census and Statistics Department

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

We're waiting for Shuting Deng to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Census and Statistics Department,

Could you please provide me data about the population in Hong Kong whose first language is Mandarin, or immigrants moving from the mainland to HK? If possible, could you also provide me a breakdown by age?

I found some relevant data here: https://www.bycensus2016.gov.hk/data/16b..., but it didn't provide a breakdown by age in terms of the population in Hong Kong whose first language is Mandarin. And I could only find data about immigrants moving from mainland, Macau and Taiwan to HK as a whole. I want to know only the mainland population. Thanks!

Yours faithfully,

Shuting Deng

Sorry, I think you offered me the wrong information. I asked for Mandarin speakers or mainlanders in HK, not single parents in HK.

Dear Shuting,

I refer to your application made under the Code on Access to Information
sent to us on 20.4.2021 and provide the answers below for your reference.

Regarding your request for i) statistics on population whose first
language is Mandarin and ii) statistics on the Mainland population in Hong
Kong, we would like to suggest you refer to the following statistical
tables attached in this email.  These tables are generated from the
Interactive Data Dissemination Service (IDDS) on the 2016 Population
By-census (16BC) Website (Link :
https://www.bycensus2016.gov.hk/en/bc‐ow...).  On the other hand ,
statistical information specifically related to “immigrants” is not
available from this department.

Table 1: Population by Usual Spoken Language and Age, 2016
Table 2: Population by Place of Birth and Age, 2016

Please note that the “usual spoken language” in Table 1 refers to the
language/ dialect a person used in a daily communication at home.  It may
not necessarily be the same as the first language / mother tongue of a
person.  “Usual spoken language” is not applicable to persons aged under 5
or mute persons.

IDDS is a service which enables the public to build and customise their
own statistical tables online with data of population census/by-census.
With only a web browser, you may build your own statistical tables or
various types of charts easily with statistics and classifications you
desire.  You are recommended to try IDDS to compile various statistics of
the Hong Kong population and you may find demonstration videos on how to
use IDDS in the following link
([1]https://www.bycensus2016.gov.hk/en/bc-de...).

If the required statistics could be compiled but are not available in IDDS
and other parts of the 16BC website, you are welcome to write to us and
specify your data requirements so that we could compile the statistics for
your (subject to a charge) based on the population census/ by-census
results accordingly.

It is an established practice since 1961 for Hong Kong to conduct a
population census once every 10 years, and a by-census in the middle of
the intercensal period.  The latest round is the 16BC.  Therefore, no
separate statistical information can be provided for those years without
conducting a population census / by-census.

Should you have any questions about population census / by-census, please
feel free to contact Demographic Statistics Section (2) of this department
(Enquiry service: (852) 3903 6944; Facsimile: (852) 2716 0231; E-mail:
[email address] ).
