Subject: Re: Enquiries about Palace Museum project (Case No.: 10043236)

Dear Sir/Madam

Thanks for your reply. Here are a few follow up questions from my students

1. As mentioned in the reply, the museum will provide accessible and interactive multimedia pieces available at all galleries and the Centre for Learning and Innovation on LG/F. Could you please give us more details about them? What technologies in particular will be applied and how will they be applied?

2. In 2017, the Palace Museum held an exhibition called discovery-YangXin palace. In the exhibition, several new digital technologies were used such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence, which allowed visitors to experience life as a chinese emperor in YangXin Palace with these digital approaches. Is there any plan for Hong Kong Palace Museum to carry out similar exhibitions or use similar technologies in order to promote digital experience of physical visits?

3. The official website of the Palace Museum has uploaded sufficient 3D-models of its collections as well as provided 68006 pictures with high resolution. In addition, panoramic technology is adopted and there are many creative animations designed to enrich the website. Will the official website of the HongKong Palace Museum provide similar digital experience? What is the plan for the Hong Kong Palace Museum to enhance the experience of website visits?

4. There is a popular app called the palace museum exhibition in which people can access the exhibits and related information of recent exhibitions in the palace museum. The app also creates games related to the culture of the palace museum. Will the Hong Kong Palace Museum consider developing an app with similar functions? Please provide relevant info if available.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely
Simon Wang

Dear Dr. Wang,

Thank you for your email.

Regarding your questions about the Hong Kong Palace Museum project, kindly find our responses as below for your reference.

On your website you mentioned that Hong Kong Palace Museum will hold a series of educational activities in order to engage the community. What kind of activities can we expect in the future? How will they engage the audience, especially the young people?
The museum will provide an open, vibrant and interactive platform for learning of Chinese art and culture.
Accessible and interactive multimedia pieces available at all galleries and the Centre for Learning and Innovation on LG/F
It will set up a Centre for Learning and Innovation on LG/F offering a rich range of thought-provoking learning programmes and activities for a variety of audiences to develop their interest and acumen in understanding art and culture.
Collections of printed and e-learning resources, space for discussion and self-study at Learning Resource Centre
It also supports schools and teachers with access to learning resources on Chinese art, history and culture in support of the current school curriculum. It will provide in-house and outreach school programmes and teaching materials, and help teachers’ professional development.
Teachers: seminars/workshops on informal learning (e.g. object-based learning)
Students: school outreach workshops, graduation exhibitions
The museum will connect with the community and reach out to diverse audiences through a wide variety of outreach and community programmes. It will recruit volunteers and engage retirees in support of museum activities.
Interdisciplinary collaboration: performing arts events, introductory talks
Docent and Volunteer programme in partnership with community groups, educators and specialists
How do you plan to promote the new museum to the public in general and to the young people in particular?
Hong Kong Palace Museum will go in line with the overall aspiration of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority to provide synergy for the vision to ‘take West Kowloon out of West Kowloon’.
The museum will embrace new curatorial approaches, offering a Hong Kong perspective and a global vision, presenting the finest objects from the Palace Museum and other leading cultural institutions around the world.
The museum will provide Docent and Volunteer programmes to build a long-term relationship with community participants, especially for university students. The programmes will allow participants to work with museum staff and experience aspects of the industry, and thus step up HKPM’s status as a public learning environment.
It will adopt an interdisciplinary approach in creating art-related dialogues and experiences outside the classroom.
Beijing Palace Museum has been one of the museums that attracts the younger generation the most. In what ways will the authority learn from the practices of Beijing Palace Museums when managing the Palace Museum Hong Kong?
Hong Kong Palace Museum takes reference from the Palace Museum in its learning approach.
It will advocate informal and hands-on learning in the museum’s on-site space and online space
It houses a Learning Resource Centre with learning spaces for public access
It will value the long-term engagement with community participants (e.g. Volunteer programme)
As the LC Paper No. CB(1)668/19-20(05) said, the intellectual property rights of cultural and creative products still need to be negotiated. Could you provide us an update on this matter?
Since the related project is under processing, we regret to inform you that there is no update on this part could be shared for the time being.
