Dear Hong Kong Observatory,
Hi! This is Zirui Yang, a student at Hong Kong Baptist University Journalism department. I am working with Dr Simon Wang to investigate the community engagement efforts of the HKSAR government. Please kindly answer the following questions under the Code on Access to Information.

1) What opportunities does the department or bureau offer for the members of the public or schools/ universities to conduct field trips or visit the government facilities or project sites, e.g. https://www.dsd.gov.hk/EN/Education/Visi...
Please list the events and the respective web pages where such information is available. If the info is not available on the web, please provide the information in your reply.

2) What outreach activities does the department or bureau organise for the communities e.g. https://www.dsd.gov.hk/EN/Education/DSD_... ?

3) If applicable, please provide the figures for 2016 and 2018 regarding (for newer events, please provide the figures available for the most recent year)
a) The number of field trips/visits for each type of events in each year
b) The total number of participants of the field trips/ visits
c) The number of outreach events held
d) The total number of participants of the outreach events

Dear Yang Zirui,

Thank you for your email request under Code on Access to Information dated
23 April. Further to our interim reply dated 28 April, the information
requested are summarised in this reply.

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) provides chance for the public to visit
the Observatory Headquarters through the guided tours and the HKO Open
Day. In view of the development of COVID-19 epidemic, public visits to the
Observatory, including the guided tour, have been suspended until further
notice. The HKO Open Day for 2021 was also held online (Link:
[1]https://openday.hko.gov.hk/) and there have been over 530,000 page
views to the Open Day webpage so far. Regarding the guided tours, you may
visit the following webpages for more information and latest

Outreach activities such as public and school  talks, seminars, courses,
workshops and exhibitions, including the HKO Open Day are regularly
organised to promote public awareness of climate change, natural
disasters, radiation monitoring and various services of the HKO. For your
information, the courses and activities organised by HKO for the public

In 2016, more than 200 guided tours were organised involving over 10,000
participants. There were more than 17,300 visitors during the HKO Open Day
2016.  There were more than 16,000 participants for around 100 public and
school talks organised, covering topics of climate change, radiation and
others, for that year. In addition, the“Science in Public Service (SIPS)”
Roving Exhibition "Climate Change. Our Response" displayed at 10 venues
attracted over 100,000 visitors.

In 2018, more than 200 guided tours were organised involving over 8,000
participants. There were nearly 13,000 visitors during the HKO Open Day
2018. There were more than 20,000 participants for around 100 public talks
organised that year. In addition, the total number of participants in
radiation outreach activities was near 9,000.
