The request was successful.

Dear Commerce and Economic Development Bureau Commerce, Industry and Tourism Branch,

I'm Michael with HKU Journalism.

I'm working on a data project aiming to dig into Hong Kong's cinema industry, which has been under pressure amid mandate closures due to the ongoing pandemic. Besides, The total number of cinemas and seats in Hong Kong have been in constant decline, dropping nearly 60% and 70% respectively from 1993 to 2015, as cited in a Legco research.

How is the cinemas performing in different parts of Hong Kong? Is there any correlation between the opening/closure of cinemas and the region's income per-capita and commercial rent level? That's the answer I try to find by examing the potential dataset.

Please kindly provide me guidance on how to retrieve these data, thanks!

Yours faithfully,
Michael

Dear Michael,

I refer to your preceding email of 11 April 2021, requesting access to
information about Hong Kong regional data on income per-capita and
commercial rent level.  Please be informed that our Branch does not
possess the requested information, as well as the information related to
the performance of cinemas in different parts of Hong Kong.

For your reference, the Census and Statistics Department provides
statistics on "Median monthly household income by District Council
district", which can be found in Table 4 of the publication Population and
Household Statistics Analysed by District Council District at
[1]https://www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/EIndexbyS...,
while the Rating and Valuation Department compiles and publishes
statistics on average rents and prices of retail premises by region (i.e.
Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories), which can be found in Table
11 of the property market statistics at
[2]https://www.rvd.gov.hk/en/property_marke....  If
you have any enquiries about these statistics, you may approach these
departments direct.  You may also try to approach the Hong Kong Box Office
Limited ([3]http://www.hkboxoffice.com/) if you wish to collect
information about box office figures of various cinemas in Hong Kong.

Regards,
Ms Carina SHUM
for Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development
