Dear Census and Statistics Department,

I am writing this request to inquire about the occupation classification from 1991 to 2016. I know that Hong Kong has been adopting the International Standard Classification of Occupation (ISCO) from ILO, but you also make some changes due to the Hong Kong context.

I am wondering if there is a list providing occupation codes in each wave of census or by-census? Preferably the list contains information about year, version of classification, codes in detail (3 or 4 digits).

I would like to have such information in English. Thank you very much.

Yours faithfully

Alexis Xu

Dear Alexis,

I refer to your application made under the Code on Access to
Information sent to us on 26.5.2021 and provide the information below for
your reference.

(A)   1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 Population Census/ By-census

2.        The occupation classifications adopted in the 1991 Population
Census, 1996 Population By-census, 2001 Population Census and 2006
Population By-census were broadly modelled on the International Standard
Classification of Occupations (ISCO-88).  Details about the occupation
codes adopted in these population censuses and by-censuses are as follows:

1991 Population Census and 1996 Population By-census
3.        The occupation codes adopted in the 1991 Population Census and
1996 Population By-census are attached below for your reference.

2001 Population Census and 2006 Population By-census
4.        The occupation codes adopted in the 2001 Population Census and
2006 Population By-census can be found from the "Classification, concept
and definition of occupation" in page 114-119 of the publication Hong Kong
2001 Population Census Main Report - Volume
II([1]https://www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/data/stat...)
and page 117-122 of the publication Hong Kong 2006 Population By-census
Main Report - Volume
II([2]https://www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/data/stat...
) respectively.

(B)   2011 Population Census and 2016 Population By-census

5.        The occupation classifications adopted in both the 2011
Population Census (11C) and the 2016 Population By-census (16BC) were
broadly modelled on the International Standard Classification of
Occupations 2008 (ISCO-08).  Details about the occupation codes adopted in
11C and 16BC are as follows:

2011 Population Census and 2016 Population By-census
6.        The occupation codes adopted in the 2011 Population Census and
2016 Population By-census can be found from the "Classification, concept
and definition of occupation" in page 114-120 of the publication Hong Kong
2011 Population Census Main Report - Volume
II([3]https://www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/data/stat...
) and page 120-125 of the publication 2016 Population By‐census -
Technical
Report([4]https://www.bycensus2016.gov.hk/data/16b... )
respectively.

7.        It is an established practice since 1961 for Hong Kong to
conduct a population census once every 10 years, and a by-census in the
middle of the intercensal period. The latest round is the 16BC. Therefore,
no separate statistical information can be provided for those years
without conducting a population census / by-census.

8.        Should you have any questions about population census /
by-census, please feel free to contact Demographic Statistics Section (2)
of this department (Enquiry service: (852) 3903 6944; Facsimile: (852)
2716 0231; E-mail: [email address] ).
