Occupation classification in HK

The request was successful.

Dear Census and Statistics Department,

Since the occupation classification follows the major groups and the sub-major groups of the International Standard Classification of Occupations (1988) or (ISCO-88) for abbreviation, is there a list of one-digit and two-digit classifications with NAMES of occupations in Hong Kong from 1981 to 2011?

For example, how would three three-digit occupations "111 Senior government officials, 112 Foreign diplomats, 113 Councillors and other politicians" be named when aggregated to a two-digit "11" level?

Yours faithfully,

Alexis Xu

Dear Alexis,
Regarding your enquiry, you may refer to the attached file (“Occupation
description_1981-2011.zip”) for the list of one-digit and two-digit
occupation classifications with NAMES of occupations in Hong Kong from
1981 to 2011.  The occupation classifications adopted in the 1981-1986,
1991-2006 and the 2011 Population Census/By-census basically follow the
“International Standard Classification of Occupations 1968 (ISCO-68)",
ISCO-88 and ISCO-08 respectively.

It is an established practice since 1961 for Hong Kong to conduct a
population census once every 10 years, and a by-census in the middle of
the intercensal period.  The latest round is the 2021 Population Census.
No separate statistical information can be provided for years without
conducting a population census/by-census.

Should you have any questions about population censuses/by-censuses,
please feel free to contact Demographic Statistics Section (2) of this
department (Enquiry service: (852) 3903 6944; Facsimile: (852) 2716 0231;
