Request for information about number and future of buffalo on South Lantau
Dear Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department,
Please could you provide the following information:
How many Lantau Water Buffalo live on South Lantau?
How many of these have now been sterilised and can no longer breed
If this number is 100% of all buffalo, please confirm that once this generation of buffalo dies, there will be no more buffalo on Lantau?
If this is the case, what plans are in place to maintain the unique ecology that they contribute to? ie wetland areas and all the species that live in these areas?
Yours faithfully,
Frances
Dear Frances,
Referring to your request dated 4 January 2024, our reply is as follows:
- How many Lantau Water Buffalo live on South Lantau?
There are about 120 stray water buffaloes on Lantau.
- How many of these have now been sterilised and can no longer
breed
Since 2010, the Department has performed sterilisations on 49 male
buffaloes and 86 female buffaloes.
- If this number is 100% of all buffalo, please confirm that once
this generation of buffalo dies, there will be no more buffalo on
Lantau?
From our understanding, there are at least 10 female buffaloes
that are still intact. There were also 6 calves that were born over the
last two years.
- If this is the case, what plans are in place to maintain the
unique ecology that they contribute to? ie wetland areas and all
the species that live in these areas?
As mentioned, there are at least 10 female buffaloes that are
still intact.
Regards,
Calvin CHAN

Dear Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department,
Thank you for your reply. You mention that there are 10 female buffalos still in tact. How many males are still in tact?
And is the intention to let them continue to breed?
Yours faithfully,
Frances
Dear Frances,
Referring to your request dated 9 January 2024, our reply is as follows:
- How many males are still in tact?
There are at least 8 male buffaloes that are still intact.
- And is the intention to let them continue to breed?
They are still able to breed. From our understanding, one
dominant male buffalo is sufficient to impregnate all female buffaloes
living in the area.
