Street block level census data

Taku Guo made this Freedom of Information request to Census and Statistics Department

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Census and Statistics Department,

I would like to study the relationship between MTR and the distribution of certain income groups, for which I would like to request the census statistics by large/small street block groups, for the years 2001 and 2006, 2011, and 2016, mainly the economic income data (personal and household) for each block group.

However, I could only find the available data of the large/small street block groups (2011 and 2016) at the bottom of the District Profile page of the 2016 By-Census (https://www.bycensus2016.gov.hk/en/bc-dp...). I would like to ask whether the information for the previous two censuses (2001 and 2006) could be available.

Thank you for your kindness and assistance.

Best regards,
Taku

Our Ref. (36) in CENST/SID/6-5/2/3 Pt. 2 21 (Application No. HQ/002/2022)

Dear Taku,

Regarding your request for statistical information on income by Large
Street Block Group (LSBG) based on the results of the 2001 Population
Census (01C) and the 2006 Population By-census (06BC), please refer to the
paragraphs below for the relevant statistical tables available for you.
In order to safeguard the confidentiality of data relating to individual
persons and households and for statistical precision reason, adjacent
Street Blocks (SBs) are grouped into Small Street Block Groups (SSBGs) and
LSBGs for data dissemination, with a minimum population of 100 in each
SSBG and 1 000 in each LSBG for 01C; and 400 in each SSBG and 1 000 in
each LSBG for 06BC and thereafter.  The boundaries of individual SBs,
SSBGs and LSBGs may vary across the years (even having the same
name/number in different years).

Free statistics
The 01C statistics on median monthly domestic household income and 06BC
statistics on median monthly domestic household income and median monthly
domestic household income by LSBG are provided in the following
statistical tables for your reference (“Table 1 and 2.xlsx”)

Table 1: Median monthly domestic household income (HK$) by Large Street
Block Group, 2001
Table 2: Median monthly income from main employment (HK$) (excluding
unpaid family workers) and median monthly domestic household income (HK$)
by Large Street Block Group, 2006

Please note that the statistics provided in Table 1 and 2 are confined to
your internal use and must not be used for re-dissemination to any person,
company and organisation.  However, you may include the statistics that
you have obtained from the Census and Statistics Department (with the
source properly acknowledged) in publication, paper or any other materials
which you prepare for academic and educational purposes.  In case the
statistics are used for commercial purposes, the statistics quoted should
only constitute an insignificant portion of your piece of work and have no
direct influence on any profit and income arising therefrom; if otherwise,
please further consult us.

Chargeable Statistics
Please be informed that the following 01C and 06BC statistical tables
relevant to monthly income from main employment and monthly domestic
household income are not readily available but can be compiled for you at
a charge.

Table 3: Working population (excluding unpaid family workers) by Large
Street Block Group and monthly income from main employment (HK$), 2001
Table 4: Domestic households by Large Street Block Group and monthly
domestic household income (HK$), 2001
Table 5: Median monthly income from main employment (HK$) (excluding
unpaid family workers) by Large Street Block Group, 2001
Table 6: Working population (excluding unpaid family workers) by Large
Street Block Group and monthly income from main employment (HK$), 2006
Table 7: Domestic households statistics by Large Street Block Group and
monthly domestic household income (HK$), 2006

Please refer to the table template in the attached Excel file (“Required
table (template).xlsx”) for the classifications to be used in the table.

Since the estimates to be provided are compiled based on sample enquiry
and thus subject to sampling error, a nil figure may mean a figure of a
small magnitude but not zero.  Similarly, figures of small magnitude are
also subject to relatively large sampling error and should be interpreted
with care.  In order to safeguard data confidentiality and to avoid
individual person, household or quarters can be identified, grouping of
classification variable(s) and suppressions may be adopted.

The charge is set to cover all additional staff efforts, computer time and
material costs incurred in preparing the tables.  Should you require the
chargeable tabulation service, please inform us by replying this e-mail.
We will then send you the payment procedures and other service details
for your consideration.

Besides, we regret to inform you that in order to safeguard the
confidentiality of data relating to individual persons and households and
for data precision concerns, only statistics on population, number of
domestic households and number of occupied quarters can be provided at
SSBG level.  Further breakdown of these statistics are not available at
SSBG level.

It is an established practice since 1961 for Hong Kong to conduct a
population census once every 10 years, and a by-census in the middle of
the intercensal period.  The latest round is the 2021 Population Census.
No separate information are available for the years without conducting a
population census/by-census.

Should you have any questions about population censuses/by-censuses,
please feel free to contact Demographic Statistics Section (2) of this
department (Tel: (852) 3903 6944; Facsimile: (852) 2716 0231; E-mail:
[email address] ).

Dear Census and Statistics Department,

Thank you for your useful information and assistance.

I would like to request the chargeable tables stated in the original email, Table 3 - Table 7. Please provide the payment instruction and further necessary steps.

Furtherly, if convenient, please also inform me of the approximate date when I could receive the final product. It would be more than helpful if I could receive the final tabulation data as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Taku Guo
