Dear Lisa,

I refer to your request for food prices trend data in geographical
details made under the Code on Access to Information on 15 October 2017.
 Our reply is provided below.

2.        The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the changes over time in
the price level of consumer commodities and services generally purchased
by households.  The year-on-year rate of change in the CPI is widely used
as an indicator of the inflation affecting consumers.

3.        Regarding your enquiry, please refer to "Table E501 : Consumer
Price Index at Commodity/Service Section/Group level (October 2014 -
September 2015 = 100)" from the website of the Census and Statistics
Department (C&SD) ([1]
[1]http://www.censtatd.gov.hk/hkstat/sub/sp...).
Table E501 contains the historical CPIs and year-on-year rates of change
for food at section level and various food breakdowns at group level.

4.        You may wish to note that the price data of consumer goods and
services for compiling the CPIs are collected from the retail outlets and
service providers throughout the territory via a Monthly Retail Price
Survey conducted by the C&SD which is designed to collect price data for
reflecting the change in consumer prices for the overall economy in Hong
Kong.  In regard to price data by district, please be informed that such
information is not available.

5.        For more information of the CPIs, please refer to the Monthly
Report on the Consumer Price Index available from the website of the C&SD
([2]
[2]http://www.censtatd.gov.hk/hkstat/sub/sp...).

6.        Should you need further assistance, please contact the Consumer
Price Index Section of the C&SD (Tel: 3903 7374 or email:
[3][email address]).
