Religious services and facilities at TTGCI
Dear Correctional Services Department,
I am writing to make an information access request regarding religious services provided in Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution. May I know,
A) What religious services are provided? (ie. Nature of the service, religions that are served)
B) Who provides the religious services?
C) How often is each respective service provided?
D) Are external religious volunteers (such as volunteer chaplains) allowed to provide services for detainees?
E) Are there religious facilities (ex. Prayer room) available? If so, what facilities are available?

Dear Sir / Madam,
Thank you for your email regarding the application for access to
information on 22 December 2021.
For religious services to persons in custody, a full-time Chaplain
co-ordinates the planning and provision of religious services. He is
assisted by a number of volunteer Chaplains who visit and conduct services
for persons in custody. A wide range of spiritual and social services were
also organized regularly in a decent and appropriate venue of institutions
by many volunteers of other religions and rehabilitation synergistic
partners.

Dear Correctional Services Department,
Thank you very much for your reply. Considering that TGCI was recommissioned as an immigration detention facility relatively recently, ie. in early 2021, I would like to ask:
1) Are religious services currently being provided?
2) How many services have been conducted since TGCI was recommissioned?
3) Are there services for people of different religions?
4) Are external religious volunteers required to register for certifications or licenses to enter the institution?

Dear Sir / Madam,
Thank you for your email on 13.1.2022.
The Department recognizes and respects the right of persons in custody to
practice their religion in correctional institutions. Corresponding
religious services are currently being provided to all persons in custody,
including detainees in TGCI, with regards to their religious needs.
Volunteers from different religious bodies and rehabilitation synergistic
partners can organize various religious activities inside correctional
institutions on a continuous or one-off basis after obtaining approval
from the Department.
The Department has not maintained other statistics and information, as
requested. Pursuant to paragraph 1.14 of the Code, we are unable to
provide such requested information.
