Dear XU Haoze,

Code on Access to Information

Application No. 153/2026

I refer to your application under the Code on Access to Information
received by the Education Bureau (EDB) on 26 September 2026.

The Education Bureau (EDB) launched the “AI for Science Education” Funding
Programme (the Programme) with the support from the Quality Education Fund
in the 2024/25 school year to pilot AI-assisted teaching in junior
secondary Science, with a view to enhancing science teachers’ capacity in
AI-assisted teaching, encouraging schools to arrange for teachers to
participate in professional development programmes and conducting trial
lessons, thereby promoting pedagogical innovations and enhancing students’
learning effectiveness.  The Programme received applications from 221
publicly-funded (including DSS) secondary schools.  All the applications
were approved and each school had received a one-off funding of $100,000
in June 2025.  The estimated total expenditure is 22.1 million.

According to EDBCM No.227/2024, schools can use the funding across school
years from the 2024/25 school year to the end of the 2026/27 school year.
Participating schools have to submit the interim report on or before 30
September 2026.  According to the information from the interim reports
collected, the total expenditures incurred is about 54% of the approved
funds, in which 65% spent on arranging for science teachers to enrol in
short courses (including seminars and workshops) related to AI-assisted
teaching and 35% spent on collaboration project related to AI-assisted
teaching with tertiary institutions or related professional bodies; 39% of
the participating schools have completed developing at least two teaching
examples or sets of resources; and 43% of the participating schools have
conducted at least one open class or classroom demonstration.

Yours sincerely,

(Miss Leah CHAN)

for Secretary for Education

Dear Mr/Ms XU Haoze,

According to EDBCM No.227/2024, schools can use the funding across school
years from the 2024/25 school year to the end of the 2026/27 school year.
Participating schools have to submit the interim report on or before 30
September 2026.  According to the information collected, the total number
of science teachers who attended short courses (including seminars and
workshops) related to AI-assisted teaching under the support of this
Programme as of September 2026 is 1082.  Given that schools are
responsible for arranging appropriate training for their teachers, the EDB
has no information regarding teacher participation in training programmes
across various institutions.  As the school is required to submit a report
and questionnaire analysis of the open lessons to the Bureau following the
completion of the project on 31 August 2027, evaluation data is currently
unavailable.

The EDB maintains ongoing communication e.g. visits to these institutions
to ensure that the courses offered under this Programme align with the
curriculum requirements of Junior Secondary Science.  Tertiary
institutions maintain their own quality assurance mechanisms for their
course offerings.

Yours sincerely,

(Miss Leah CHAN)

for Secretary for Education
